Sample 2: Building High Performance Offline-First Mobile Apps

The Offline-First Reality

Users expect apps to work immediately regardless of subway tunnels, spotty Wi-Fi, or airplane rides. Waiting for network round-trips for every UI tap is an outdated model.

In an offline-first app:

  1. Reads always hit local disk first. Zero spinner delays.
  2. Writes mutate local state immediately.
  3. Background sync pushes deltas whenever connectivity resumes.

Sync Architecture

We maintain a local transaction log with vector clocks to track mutations. When the device reconnects:

  • Delta payloads are dispatched to the sync endpoint.
  • Server validates timestamps and merges cleanly.
  • Client state updates optimistically without blocking the UI thread.
